Hendrik Jongbloed
1825-1910

Antje Houwink
1824-1916

Hendrikus (Hendrik) Jongbloed (15) (1825-1910) was born in Doniawerstal to Jacobus Frankes Jongbloed and Sipkje Reinders Ruardi (married 1816). He died in 1910 in Arnhem. Antje Houwink (9) (1824-1916) was born in Sneek in 1824 to Geert Houwink and Sietske van Gorkum. She died in 1916 in Arnhem. They were married in Sneek in 1849. They were the parents of this large brood, and they were also my grandmother's grandparents. They had seven children, each described in their own sections below:

  • Sietske Jongbloed (not shown)
  • Geert Jongbloed (19)
  • Sine Jongbloed (2)
  • Bartha Jongbloed (21)
  • Jacoba Fracisca Jongbloed (5)
  • Sipkje Jongbloed (1)
  • Nienke Jongbloed (13)

The family lived in Sneek, in the province of Friesland. In those days in Holland, it was unusual for a girl to learn a trade, but the three daughters Sine (2), Bartha (21) and Jacoba (5) were rather emancipated and they were interested in science. All three became pharmacy assistants. Sine, who never married, later became one of the first women in Holland to go to the University and she became a pharmacist.

The Prior Generation

The photos below are of paintings of the parents of Hendrik Jongbloed (Jacobus Jongbloed and Sipkje Ruardi) and Antje Houwink (Geert Houwink and Sytske van Gorkum), who all lived near Sneek. I assume that they were all painted at the same time after the marriage of Hendrik Jongbloed and Antje Houwink, in about 1850. Jacobus Jongbloed died in 1826, so his portrait was produced posthumously.

These photos were acquired by Siepko Trip from Wim Baljet (81 years old), the owner of the paintings, who is a son of Anna van Mens (6) and grandson of Bartha Jongbloed (21).

Jacobus Jongbloed was a notary in the village of Langweer (in Friesland). In a registry of Friesland notaries, Siepko discovered that Jacobus Jongbloed was appointed notary twice: 10 August 1802, and 13 May 1816. The first date was when he was appointed as a notary in Holland under French government, and the second was when he was re-appointed after the Battle of Waterloo and the start of the Kingdom of Holland.

Sietske Jongbloed
1853-1883
There was an older sister, Sietske, who died before this picture was taken. Sietske Jongbloed was born on 5 February 1853, and passed away 13 August 1883 at age 30. She married Rudolphus Feenstra, who was born on 10 December 1853 and died 18 November 1893 at age 39. They were married on 10 July 1878. Jaap Feenstra (17) is their son. My source for this entry shows their son as Jacob Rudolphus Feenstra, born in Sneek, 19 July 1879, who became a gold and silver blacksmith. This would make him about 20 in this picture.

Geert Jongbloed
1857-?

Geert (19) was the only boy of the six Jongbloed children. He was born in 1857 in Sneek. He married Froukje Schutter (20) in 1888 in Groningen. She was 33 years old. They had three children:

  • Christien, a daughter (18).
  • Anneke, a daughter (8). Married to A. Schwyter, a forester, in Switzerland.
  • Hendrik Jan, a son (16). Married A. van Tongeren.

Gezina (Sine) Jongbloed (1859-1945)

Tante Sine (2) was the older sister of Oma Trip (5). Sine, who never married, became one of the first women in Holland to go to the University where she became a pharmacist.

Gezina later worked as senior pharmacist in the community hospital in Arnhem. At the Battle of Arhem (A Bridge Too Far) she was evacuated to Utrecht where she died just after the end of the war, supervised by Mrs. Bazuine-Hendriks who looked after Jacoba Francisca Trip-Jongbloed as well and whose husband provided the tiles with the Trip family crest.

Bartha Jongbloed
1861-1945

Bartha (21) was the third Jongbloed daughter. She married Nicolaus (Nico) van Mens (22) in 1886 in Sneek. She died in 1945 in Apeldoorn at the age of 83. They had four children:

  • Cornelia, a daughter (11).
  • Nico, a son (23).
  • Anna, a daughter (6) (1889 - ?).
  • Alie, a daughter (4).

Thanks

Thanks to Hanke Trip Hoogendoorn and Maria (Mies) Runeman Trip for their help in identifying the people in this photo. Mies is probably the only person alive who could have accomplished this task. Her son Siepko has also helped with many details.
