This family tree shows the direct line of Trips from Gerrit Jansz, who lived in a house in Zaltbommel named "the Trip" (or "de Trip" in Dutch), through my grandmother's father (Hendrik Jan Trip), to the present. Although I have some information about recent generations, I have omitted these details to protect their privacy.

On the left is the family coat of arms, as shown in the Nederland's Patriciaat, 1963. On the right is a family tile, made some time after World War II.

It seems safe to say that the ancestors of the first Trips were shoemakers, of a specialized variety. The book on the Trip family in the 17th century mentions that the name Tripmeker was in use in Zaltbommel in 1369. This seems like a possible source for the Trip name, given the coat of arms.

Gerrit Jansz, also named Gerrit in the Trip, lived in Zaltbommel in 1495; still alive in 1530.

Jan Gerritsz, also named Jan in the Trip Gerritsz, born about 1490, ship's captain, mentioned as the owner of the house "The Trip" in the Kerkstraat in Zaltbommel 1527-1543. Children:

Jacob Jansz Trip, born about 1530, shipowner in Zaltbommel, guesthouse manager there in 1578; married Jesse (Jacoba) de Cocq Elias, from de Bommelerwaard. Died in 1584 in Zaltbommel. Children of Jacob Jansz Trip and Jesse de Cocq Elias:

1. Elias (1569-1636) was born in Zaltbommel (more below).

   Their sons Louys (1605-1684) and Hendrick (1607-1666) established their firm Louys and Hendrick Trip in Amsterdam, dealing in weapons and ammunition for war. During their youth they had spent some years in Sweden, where their uncle Louys de Geer had developed a strong position in the weapons trade. Back in Amsterdam, this business went so well, that in 1655 they were able to build a double house in Amsterdam on the Kloveniersburgwal, where they continued their trade together.

   In 1660 they started building the Trippenhuis and in 1662 Hendrick and his wife Johanna de Geer and Louys and his wife Emerentia Hoefslager moved there. Their families died out in 1796.

Elias Trip (1569-1636) was born in Zaltbommel, had a business in Dordrecht from 1593, then in 1613 became a wholesaler in armaments, iron and copper and director of the Levant trade organization in Amsterdam. Married in 1592 to Maria de Geer (1574-1609), daughter of Louys de Geer and Marie de Jalhea. From this marriage:

Elias in 1611 remarries Alithea Adriaensdr (dr stands for daughter) (1589-1656). Daughter of Adriaen Jansz. and Sophia Heymans.

Adrianus Trip (1621-1684), born in Amsterdam, merchant in Norrkoeping (Sweden), master "knaap" for the Woodprocessors at Brederode, settled at Wildervanck in 1667. Married in 1645 to Adriane de Geer (1627-1685), daughter of Louys de Geer and Adriane Gerard.

1. Louis Trip (1654-1698), born in Noerkoeping Sweden, died in Warfumborg, Groningen. Louis married Johanna Margaretha de Geer (1648-1680) in 1679, strengthening the ties between the two families.

Scato Trip died in Lisse in 1721.

I believe that the owner of the portraits of Elias and Adrianus Trip, the Laman Trip family, are descended from Scato's son Hendrik Jan (> Scato Trip 1742-1822 > Herman Trip 1776-1846 > Willem Laman Trip 1809-1873 > Herman Laman Trip 1840-1876). The Laman name appears to come from Herman's wife's mother, and was passed down to all Herman's children.

Aegidius Daniel Trip (1751-1825), born at Breda, later city treasurer at Haaksbergen. Married in 1778 (1783?) to Jacomina Jansen, who dies in 1791 at the birth of their last child. From his second marriage to Fenneken Aalberink (1764-1812) in 1797 eight more children are born. The first child from the first marriage is Hendrik. Children of Jacomina Jansen:

Around 1796/1797 Aegidius Daniel Trip was remarried to Fenneken Aalberink (also Fenne Albrink). The exact date is unknown because there is a gap between the years 1795 and 1798 in the marriagebook of Haaksbergen. Children of Fenneken Aalberink (daughter of Jan Aalberink and Aaltjen Lammers):

Hendrik Jan Trip (1863-1933), geography and history teacher at H.B.S in Almelo. Married in 1896 to Jacoba Francisca Jongbloed (1863-1938), daughter of Hendricus Jacobus Jongbloed and Antje Houwink.

Married in 1939 to Maria Roeloffina Runeman (1917- ) daughter of Jan Siepko Runeman and Hanke Wilhelmina Henderika Bathoorn. Scato Hendrik and Maria Roeloffina had six children.

They have 13 grandchildren, of which Scato Hendrik, the son of Siepko, is the only Trip.

Siepko Carel Trip (1940), now a retired notary in Almere. A dutch notary is a specialized lawyer appointed by the Queen in limited numbers.

Scato Hendrik Trip (1970-)

I have found one source that lists possible earlier ancestors:

• GERRIT BENNINGH GERRITSZN, born ca 1370. Married BAERT VERBURGH.
• GERRIT BENNINGH GERRITSZN, born ca 1400. Married KATRIJN PAULUSDGT VAN NECKEREN.
• JAN BENNINGH GERRITSZN, born ca 1430, Schepen van Amsterdam in 1471. Married JACOBSDGT.

I have no evidence that these are actually relatives. But given these dates (there's an amazing tendency for the generations to be 30-35 years apart), we'd expect the next generation to be Gerrit Janszn in 1460, which matches the above. These were found in a kwartierstaadt that included the oldest Trips in this tree. A kwartierstaadt is a format of genealogy in which you can find the father of any individual by taking that person's number and doubling it. These people were not under the correct numbers to be Trip ancestors. However, taking the number of Jan Benningh Gerritszn and dividing by two should point at his son or daughter. This didn't point at a valid person in the tree either, so I consider it at least a possibility still. The person who posted this kwartierstaat said that it was compiled by his grandfather long ago, so he had no further information to add.
