The Agrodome! What is an agrodome? It's not a dome and has nothing to do with
agro-culture, but it is a good friendly place to do a little sheep-watching.
I've decided that they could achieve total commercial success if they would
only publish the "New Zealand Guide to Sheep," much like similar volumes for
birds, plants, animals... After visiting the agrodome the avid sheepwatcher
could cross off all the various varieties as "Have Seen", the credo of the
tourist. The Agrodome is apparently owned and operated by a single man, a
refreshing break from the other places run by the Tourism Bureau (or whatever
it is really called). He shows "19 Champion Rams" all of different breeds,
which are the basic varieties of sheep bred in New Zealand. H gives just enough
of the ancestry of each of the breeds. Basically there are only a couple of
purebreds -- the rest are crosses of these. Then he proceeds with a
sheepshearing, a brief demo of a sheepdog; then you can go outside to watch a
sheepdog perform with sheep. Overall an enjoyable performance, highly
recommended.
